  • Buyers Don’t Always Wait for Expiration: How My .AI Domain Sold Early

When selling a domain, many first-time investors assume that buyers will always wait for the domain to drop—to catch it cheaply after expiration.

My first .ai domain sale taught me otherwise.

I have always been optimistic about .ai domains. Many AI startups today are choosing .ai as their primary domain, not just as a secondary branding asset. While .com remains the ultimate hard currency, from a trend perspective, the rise of .ai in AI-focused niches feels inevitable.

Treating domain investing as a small personal experiment, I cautiously purchased a single .ai domain. I wasn’t in a rush to flip it and initially thought that any sale would happen slowly, or that buyers might simply wait for the domain to expire.

Then I noticed the expiration date.

The domain had less than two weeks left.

    Pressure mounted:

    • .ai domains are expensive to renew

    • Renewal requires two years upfront

    • Total renewal cost was close to $200

    • Failing to sell would add another ~$100 to my cost basis

With the clock ticking, I actively searched for solutions and consulted AI tools like ChatGPT. The consistent advice: list the domain on Sedo.

At first, I hesitated. I knew mainstream platforms like Namecheap and GoDaddy, but Sedo was different. Why?

Sedo is a secondary domain market. Its buyers are investors, not just end users. They don’t buy domains solely for immediate usage—they buy for potential, positioning, and certainty.

I listed the domain on Sedo with a Buy Now price of $1,000. A few days passed with no inquiries, and I began to worry. I wondered:

    • Was the price too high?

    • Would buyers wait for expiration to pick it up cheaply?

    Then, something unexpected happened.

I received an email from Sedo.

The domain had been sold. The buyer had already paid in full.
All that remained was to provide the transfer authorization code.

    I was genuinely shocked.

The transaction was smooth, and after deducting all costs, I made approximately $600 in profit—with very little effort.

This experience taught me a key lesson about domain investing:

    Serious buyers pay for certainty.

Not all buyers are willing to gamble on a domain dropping. Many prefer to secure the asset immediately, even at a premium, rather than risk someone else acquiring it first. This is the essence of the risk vs certainty tradeoff:

    • Waiting for expiration reduces cost but increases risk

    • Paying a premium provides certainty and immediate control

In secondary markets, this behavior is common, especially for niche and emerging TLDs like .ai, where future demand is highly anticipated. Buyers recognize that waiting might cost them more than the premium needed to secure the domain now.

The takeaway for domain investors is clear:

    • Don’t assume buyers will always wait for a drop

    • Set a reasonable Buy Now price to signal value and attract certainty-driven investors

    • Understand that premium pricing can accelerate sales by reducing perceived risk for buyers

In my case, the right price, the right platform, and the right timing created a miracle sale—all without relying on expiration or luck.
